The city sits on both banks of the French Broad River, near the center of the French Broad Basin. Two miles upstream, the Swannanoa River joins the French Broad River from the east. The entire valley, called the Asheville Plateau, is flanked by eastern and western mountain ranges. Thirty miles south of the city, the Blue Ridge Mountains form an escarpment, with average elevations of 2,700 feet. Nearby are Mt. Mitchell (6,684 ft.), and Big Pisgah (5,721 ft.). An invigorating temperate climate with considerable variations in temperatures from day to day throughout the year. The valley has a pronounced effect on wind direction, which is mostly from the northwest. Destructive weather events are rare, however, the French Broad River is subject to flooding, especially during 12-year cycles.
